The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large-scale counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, seizing products valued at more than N2 billion.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday by operatives of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate following credible intelligence about suspected illegal activities within the complex.
According to the agency, the raid led to the discovery of more than 20 illegal stores allegedly used for the production, revalidation and storage of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
NAFDAC said its operatives found suspects allegedly blending and counterfeiting popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and stockpiling banned imported products.
The agency disclosed that two suspects were arrested during the enforcement operation, while the seized products were evacuated from the premises.
The operation forms part of NAFDAC’s efforts to combat the circulation of counterfeit, expired and unsafe products in the Nigerian market and protect consumers from the potential health risks associated with their consumption.
The agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious manufacturing, product revalidation or sales activities to the appropriate authorities.
It advised consumers to report suspected violations through its official complaints line on 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322).
