Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved N1 billion to accelerate the take-off of the newly established Federal University of Agriculture and Entrepreneurship, Bama.
The governor made the announcement while receiving an inter-ministerial delegation at the Government House in Maiduguri. The delegation included officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Budget Office, and the Office of the Head of Service, who were in the state to assess facilities for the institution’s commencement.
The university was established after President Bola Tinubu signed a bill sponsored by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan into law on May 22, 2025.
As part of efforts to ensure a smooth start, Zulum had earlier handed over the Umar Ibn Ibrahim Elkanemi College of Education, Science and Technology, Bama, to the federal government to serve as the university’s temporary campus.
Announcing the financial support, Zulum said: “I want to announce the donation of N1 billion for the take-off of the university.” He directed the state Commissioner for Education to identify immediate needs to be addressed with the funds, noting that Borno State must create the right environment for the new institution to thrive despite its federal status.
“The services that would be rendered are for the good people of Borno State,” he said. “For me, every federal institution, especially tertiary institutions, belongs to Borno State government.”
The governor also pledged to construct staff quarters and extend further support to ensure the successful rollout of academic activities.
Leader of the federal delegation, Hajiya Rakiya Gambo IIiyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, expressed satisfaction with the facilities already in place. “What we saw was quite encouraging,” she said, adding that the institution “has everything it needs to take off” and that staff verification would begin immediately.
