Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has overseen the resettlement of 1,200 displaced persons in Baga area of the state.
Baga, according to WorldClass247News findings, was a once-prosperous fishing community that was overrun by insurgents more than seven years ago.
During his visit over the weekend, Governor Zulum provided financial and material assistance to returnees who had been living in IDP camps in Mongun.
Each of the716 women received N10,000, a wrapper, and children’s clothing while 486 men were also gifted with N10,000 each.
Additionally, every family were also noticed to have received a bag of rice, a bag of maize, and other food items to support their reintegration.
Baga, located along the shore of Lake Chad 8n Kukawa local government council of the state, was once a vital economic hub before falling under insurgent control.
In a bid to facilitate a safe return, Zulum, it would be recalled to have set up a resettlement committee led by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan.
The committee was tasked with the responsibility of reconstructing homes and public infrastructure, ensuring that displaced residents could return under improved conditions.
Addressing the returnees, Governor Zulum expressed optimism about their resettlement.
“This town was dislodged by insurgents many years ago. Today, to the glory of God, we are witnessing the first return of the people to their hometown from Monguno,” he said.
He urged the returnees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, emphasizing that security measures would be strictly enforced to maintain peace in Baga.
