The College of Postgraduate Studies at Taraba State University, Jalingo, is experiencing a transformative phase that promises to redefine the standard of higher education in the region. This remarkable turnaround is being driven by the visionary leadership of Governor Agbu Kefas, who has made education a priority in his administration. With a clear commitment to fostering academic excellence and integrity, Governor Kefas’s efforts are paving the way for a brighter academic future for the state.
“We are focused on making Taraba State University a center of academic excellence. This is a cornerstone of our strategy to empower the youth and advance the state,” Governor Kefas remarked during a recent event.
Central to this transformation is the leadership of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, who has been instrumental in reshaping the institution’s academic framework. Prof. Bako’s efforts have introduced critical structural and policy reforms aimed at creating an environment conducive to quality learning and groundbreaking research.
“Education is the foundation of development. At Taraba State University, we are committed to ensuring our postgraduate programs meet national and global standards,” Prof. Bako said.
Under the administration of Acting Provost Prof. Christian Igomu Amuche, the College of Postgraduate Studies has achieved significant milestones in the 2023/2024 academic session. One of the most notable accomplishments is the automation of examination results. This initiative enhances efficiency and transparency, reducing the workload on lecturers while ensuring timely and accurate results processing.
“We understand that postgraduate education is not just about degrees but about fostering innovation and critical thinking. These reforms are geared toward that goal,” Prof. Amuche explained.
The college is also taking proactive steps to align its programs with the requirements of the National Universities Commission (NUC). Curricula are being reviewed and prepared for the NUC’s due diligence process, ensuring that postgraduate programs receive full legal recognition.
In a bid to maintain the highest standards of research integrity, Prof. Amuche introduced a mandatory plagiarism check for all theses and dissertations before final examinations. “Plagiarism undermines academic integrity, and we are taking bold steps to eliminate it,” he stated.
A revamped Records Unit, equipped with computerized systems, is further enhancing the efficiency of managing student and academic records. The college has also developed customized administrative templates for processes such as financial management and student records, streamlining operations across the board.
Notably, the college has witnessed a surge in admissions for the 2023/2024 academic session, with over 1,000 candidates admitted into various programs. This increase is partly attributed to Governor Kefas’s policy of a 50% reduction in postgraduate school fees, making higher education more accessible to a broader demographic.
The Faculty of Health Sciences is also expanding its academic portfolio with plans to introduce new postgraduate diploma, master’s, and doctoral programmes. To meet the demands of these initiatives, the college is scaling up its manpower and administrative capacity.
Beyond academics, the college is fostering alumni engagement by organizing activities that encourage collaboration and networking among graduates. It recently hosted its maiden Annual Doctoral Conference and workshops on plagiarism, further underlining its dedication to academic excellence.
The synergy between the state government, the university’s management, and the leadership of the College of Postgraduate Studies has created an ecosystem primed for sustainable growth and innovation. Governor Kefas, in collaboration with Prof. Bako and Prof. Amuche, is not only reshaping Taraba State University but also positioning it as a beacon of academic excellence in Nigeria.
“The transformation we are witnessing is just the beginning. Our goal is to make Taraba State University a leader in postgraduate education across the country,” Prof. Amuche concluded.
With these concerted efforts, the College of Postgraduate Studies is poised to become a hub of academic and research excellence, reflecting a shared commitment to redefining higher education in Taraba State, and indeed Nigeria.
