The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned four suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) before the Federal High Court in Abuja over their alleged involvement in the abduction and killing of a DSS operative, Ekpeyong Asuquo Owoh.
The suspects — Michael Okafor, Chinedu Joseph Chukwudozie, Chibunna Olisa and Chigozie Olisa — were arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism, kidnapping and related offences.
The prosecution alleged that the defendants conspired to commit acts of terrorism and participated in the abduction of Owoh while he was travelling from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Awka, Anambra State.
According to the prosecution, the DSS operative was taken hostage during the alleged operation and subsequently killed by the suspects.
The defendants were also accused of belonging to IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), both of which the prosecution linked to activities allegedly connected with terrorism.
The prosecution further alleged that the suspects unlawfully possessed firearms, including AK-47 and pump-action rifles, in connection with the offences.
The four defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them.
Following their pleas, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ordered that the defendants be remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
The judge subsequently adjourned the case until October 6, 2026, for commencement of trial.
Security sources said Owoh was reported missing on February 23, 2022, along the Orlu Road in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
He was reportedly travelling in a silver-coloured Pontiac Vibe at the time of his disappearance while heading towards Awka.
The latest arraignment brings the alleged abduction and killing of the DSS operative before the court, where the prosecution will be required to establish its allegations against the defendants.
The defendants remain presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by the court.
