Commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders, in Donga local government council of Taraba state, have embarked on a strike to protest alleged extortion by security personnel at checkpoints along the Donga–Rafin Kada road.
The riders alleged that security personnel at various checkpoints along the route demand N200 from each motorcycle operator.
According to the protesters, there are at least 10 checkpoints between Donga and Rafin Kada, meaning that riders are forced to pay more than N2,000 per trip.
They described the alleged payments as excessive and unbearable, lamenting that the situation is negatively affecting their businesses and making commercial motorcycle operations increasingly difficult.
The protesting riders have appealed to the Chairman of Donga local government council, relevant security authorities, and the Taraba state government to urgently intervene and address the situation.
They are calling for an end to the alleged extortion to enable them to carry out their daily activities without unnecessary financial burdens.
