The Northwest University, Sokoto (NWUS) has reached a proud new chapter in its history. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza announced, on Tuesday, that the university secured full accreditation for the vast majority of its programmes following a rigorous review by the National Universities Commission (NUC) late last year.

During a press conference at the Senate Chambers, Prof. Bunza shared the results with a sense of collective pride. He credited the achievement to the grit and dedication of the university’s staff and students, as well as the steadfast guidance of the Governing Council and the institution’s Founder and Pro-Chancellor, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sarkin Yakin Sokoto).

Accreditation success across the board

The NUC assessment, conducted in the final quarter of 2025, resulted in full, five-year accreditation for the following departments:

• Computing and Science: All four assessed programmes—BSc. Computer Science, BSc. Cyber Security, BSc. Information Technology, and BSc. Software Engineering—earned full accreditation.
• Social and Management Sciences: Both Accounting and Public Administration received full accreditation, while Business Administration was granted interim status.
• Education: Special Education and Library and Information Science both secured full accreditation.
• General Social Sciences: Economics, Psychology, and Sociology also achieved full accreditation.

Regarding the Business Administration programme, Prof. Bunza viewed the interim status as a constructive roadmap rather than a setback. It provides the university with a clear list of areas to refine and strengthen ahead of the next NUC review, a challenge the faculty is already embracing.

Prof. Bunza expressed his appreciation to the NUC, led by Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, for their professional and collaborative approach throughout the process. As the university continues its journey of “building a home of knowledge that speaks to the world,” the administration remains fully committed to upgrading its infrastructure and nurturing a culture of excellence for its students.
