Fresh concerns have emerged over the state of rail infrastructure in Bauchi State following allegations of ongoing dismantling of railway components in key parts of the state, prompting urgent calls for federal clarification and accountability.
Governor Bala Mohammed has sounded the alarm over the reported removal of railway sleepers along major rail corridors, describing the development as both troubling and potentially damaging to the economic prospects of the region.
The areas at the center of the controversy—Alkaleri and Tafawa Balewa local government areas—are considered strategic for agricultural production and rural connectivity.
According to the governor, contractors were allegedly seen removing railway infrastructure during his recent trip to Alkaleri for a condolence visit, raising immediate concerns about the intent and authorization behind the exercise.
In response, governor Mohammed directed his Chief of Staff, Dr. Aminu Gamawa, to formally engage the Federal Ministry of Transport, seeking urgent clarification on the status and legality of the operation. He warned that the removal of such critical infrastructure without the knowledge or consent of the state government raises serious questions about coordination and transparency.
While security personnel reportedly accompanying the contractors claimed the activity was backed by federal directives, the governor dismissed the explanation as inadequate, insisting that due process and intergovernmental communication must be upheld in matters involving national assets.
The development has sparked wider concerns about the potential neglect of vital regions, particularly as rail transport remains a key driver of economic activity in the state. In a statement issued by his New Media Aide, Lawal Muazu, governor Mohammed warned that continued dismantling of railway facilities could undermine livelihoods and stall economic growth across affected communities. The governor further called for stronger collaboration between federal and state authorities, stressing that transparency and mutual consultation are critical to safeguarding national assets and ensuring equitable development.
