Ahmad Al Ahmad – a Muslim dad of two, with no firearms training – stepped into the line of fire during the attack on a Jewish gathering. Without hesitation and without being deterred by the identity of the target of the terrorist attacks, he wrote his own courage, wrestled the gun from one of the shooters, saving countless lives.
The brutal assault on Jewish worshippers at the start of Hanukkah was wholly unacceptable and epitomizes antisemitism. Equally unacceptable is the practice of blaming the entire Jewish community for the actions of the Israeli government and Zionists—or of defending the terrorist actions committed by Israel in the name of all Jews.
Islam teaches that protecting a single soul is like saving all humanity, and Ahmad lived that teaching in the most dangerous moment imaginable. He risked his own life, not for fame, but because every life matters, no matter the faith, race or background.
Ahmad Al Ahmad was shot twice in the process of preventing further attacks on the Jewish worshippers and we wish him full recovery. We pray for all victims of terrorism.
We salute Ahmad as a true Australian hero, a model Muslim in preserving human life and a shining example of bravery, compassion, and the unity that binds us all.
