Thirteen-year-old Aondoakaa Ushahem Isaac from Taraba State has clinched victory in the Group C Male Singles Ayo game at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
Isaac’s stellar performance saw him defeat competitors from Kwara and Anambra states, earning him the top spot in his group. Although he faced a defeat to Ogun State’s representative, Isaac’s wins over Kwara and Anambra ensured his progression to the quarterfinals.
Reflecting on his achievement, Isaac credited his success to divine intervention and praised his coach, Victoria Sende, for her unwavering support and rigorous training.
The young athlete also called on the authorities to give the Ayo game more attention in his home state of Taraba. His coach, Victoria Sende, echoed this sentiment, noting the limited participation of Taraba in the sport. The state is currently competing in only one out of the five Ayo game categories.
“Taraba has qualified for the quarterfinals, but more needs to be done to support the growth of the sport,” Coach Sende said. “We urge the state government to invest more in promoting Ayo game and ensure it receives the attention it deserves.”
Isaac’s victory has been hailed as a significant achievement for Taraba at the National Youth Games, showcasing the untapped potential of the state’s young athletes in competitive sports. The Guardian has also highlighted his success as a notable milestone for Taraba in this year’s edition of the games.
