A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State, Faruk A. Shehu, has sounded the alarm over the party’s dwindling fortunes in the state, warning that unless urgent action is taken, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could face a major setback in the 2027 elections.
Shehu criticized the state’s APC leadership for sidelining key stakeholders who played critical roles in the party’s success in the 2023 elections.
He singled out former Senator for Sokoto South, Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba, as a pivotal figure whose contributions were instrumental in securing votes for Tinubu.
According to Shehu, Danbaba invested more resources than any other APC leader in Sokoto and used his political experience to rally support for the party. Despite this, he lamented that the former senator has not been rewarded with any political appointment at the state or national level.
“Danbaba deserved a ministerial position, yet he was overlooked. His supporters have also been completely sidelined—no commissioner, no special adviser, not even a local government chairman. This is unacceptable.” Shehu stated.
He further emphasized that Danbaba was responsible for securing 45% of the votes APC received in Sokoto in the last election and warned that if the former senator leaves the party, APC could struggle to maintain its support base in the state.
Shehu called on the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to intervene and address the concerns of Danbaba and his supporters.
He urged the party to restructure its leadership in Sokoto and ensure that loyal stakeholders receive due recognition.
“If the APC leadership fails to act, Danbaba’s supporters may resort to a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction,” Shehu cautioned.
The warning, was observed to have come amid growing tensions within the APC in Sokoto, with party members increasingly voicing concerns over leadership decisions and the distribution of political appointments.
