The Edo State Consumer Protection Committee says it will commence full enforcement of the ban on sachet gin and locally produced herbal mixtures popularly known as “Agbo” across the state from Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The committee said the grace period given to traders and other stakeholders to comply with the directive expired on Sunday, September 20, paving the way for enforcement of the ban.
Chairman of the committee, Mr Iyamu Osaro Culture, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, warning traders and members of the public against selling, hawking or hoarding the affected products.
According to him, anyone found violating the directive will face sanctions, with prescribed fines paid into the Edo State Government Single Account.
He added that sachet gin and Agbo found in the possession of violators would be seized and confiscated by enforcement officials.
Culture urged traders to comply with the directive to avoid penalties, stressing the need for stakeholders to support measures aimed at protecting consumers from fake, adulterated and potentially harmful products.
He said the announcement was made to adequately prepare traders, consumers and other members of the public for the commencement of the enforcement exercise.
The chairman further called on residents to cooperate with enforcement officials by providing relevant information on the sale, hawking or hoarding of the banned products.
The committee reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that harmful and adulterated products are removed from circulation across Edo State.
