Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has called on young people across the state to embrace agriculture and form cooperative societies, as part of a broader strategy to foster economic growth and self-reliance through commercial farming.

Alia made the appeal on Saturday while delivering a tribute at the funeral of the Late Ter Kyôôr, Chief Thomas Jam Gbinde, a respected traditional ruler.

Addressing the gathering of mourners, the governor urged youths to avoid social vices and instead channel their energy into productive ventures, especially in agriculture.

Highlighting his administration’s commitment to agricultural development, Governor Alia noted that tractors have already been distributed to local government areas and announced plans to provide free herbicides and fertilizers to farmers in a bid to boost food production statewide.

Offering condolences to the Tiv Traditional Council and the bereaved family, the governor expressed hope that the late Chief Gbinde’s virtuous life had earned him eternal rest. “We must look to God for comfort,” he said. “Chief Gbinde’s legacy will continue to inspire us.”

In separate remarks, the President General of Mzough u Tiv, retired Commissioner of Police Iorbee Ihyagh, and Professor Mrs. Hembadoon Ayatse, wife of the Tor Tiv, extended sympathies to the family. CP Ihyagh urged the state government to intensify its efforts in addressing insecurity to allow displaced farmers to safely return to their lands. He also called on politicians to set aside divisive rhetoric, especially on security matters.

Professor Ayatse commended Governor Alia for his proactive security measures and encouraged Tiv women to join the “Kasev Tiv Bam Multipurpose Cooperative,” which is already supporting women through small business loans.

Representing the Tor Tiv and Chairman of the Benue State Traditional Council, Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, the Tor Kwande, Chief Ambrose Iortyer, and the Tor Jechira, Chief Edward Ujege, eulogized the late Chief Gbinde and urged unity among the Tiv people to safeguard their ancestral heritage.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Dr. Barnabas Gemade, and retired Brigadier General Atom Kpera also thanked the state government and the many mourners in attendance. They prayed for the peaceful repose of the late monarch’s soul.

The funeral, was observed to have brought together dignitaries, traditional leaders, and community members in a solemn celebration of the life and service of Chief Thomas Jam Gbinde.
