The Chief Imam of the Technobat Jumat Mosque in Jalingo, Sheikh Mohammed Babangida Aliyu, has urged journalists across Nigeria to uphold truth, fairness, and accuracy in their reports as part of efforts to promote peace and unity in the country.
Sheikh Aliyu made the call on Friday while receiving members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), who observed the Friday worshipp in his Mosque as part of activities marking the association’s 60th anniversary celebration.
The cleric emphasized the importance of responsible journalism, noting that the media plays a critical role in shaping public opinion and fostering societal harmony.
“Journalists must always say the truth and avoid publishing stories that could jeopardize the peace of our country. The pen is powerful, and it should be used to promote understanding, not division,” Sheikh Aliyu said.
Also speaking, former Deputy National President of SWAN, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Moyoyo, commended the Imam for his wise counsel and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to ethical and professional journalism.
Moyoyo also highlighted the objectives of SWAN, which, according to him, include uniting Nigerian sports journalists under one professional body, promoting ethical standards, and contributing to sports development across the country.
He assured the cleric of the association’s readiness to partner with individuals, groups, and organizations willing to promote sports in Taraba State and Nigeria at large.
Supporting Moyoyo’s remarks, the Taraba State Chairman of SWAN, Jude Nuhu G, commended the mosque leadership for hosting the association and allowing members to join in the Jumat prayers.
He pledged that SWAN in Taraba would not take the gesture for granted and urged journalists interested in joining the association to register without delay.
