Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has congratulated the Nigerian Super Eagles on their 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-final of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the win as a proud moment for Nigeria and a signal of the team’s resurgence in African football.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, Governor Radda praised the Super Eagles for their discipline, unity and determination, noting that the goals scored by Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams underscored the team’s quality and hunger for continental success.
The governor said the victory went beyond securing a semi-final ticket, adding that it reflected resilience, belief and national pride.
According to him, the team’s performance against a traditional rival like Algeria demonstrated mental strength and tactical maturity, qualities he said would be crucial as the competition intensifies.
Governor Radda also recalled the long-standing rivalry between Nigeria and Algeria at the AFCON, noting that the two sides have now met ten times in the tournament’s history. He said Nigeria’s victories came in 1980, 2002, 2010 and now 2026, while Algeria recorded wins in 1982, twice in 1990—including the final—and again in 2019.
He observed that the 2026 victory was particularly significant, as it helped ease the painful memories of past defeats, especially the losses in 1990, and restored national pride.
The governor commended the Super Eagles’ technical crew and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their leadership and support, urging the team to maintain focus and discipline as they prepare for their semi-final clash against host nation Morocco.
He assured the team of the prayers and support of Nigerians, expressing confidence that with the same courage and unity, the Super Eagles could go all the way in the tournament.
Governor Radda concluded by wishing the team success in their next match and encouraged them to continue flying the green-white-green flag with pride and excellence.
