The stage is set for a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations showdown as Nigeria’s Super Eagles face Algeria’s Fennecs on Saturday at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. local time.
Coach Eric Chelle expressed confidence that his squad is fully focused on the task ahead, putting past encounters behind them.
“It’s crucial for me to maintain focus on the pitch. While energy matters, the mindset is paramount. Our group will remain united,” Chelle said. “This match is critical against a formidable opponent. We are determining our game plan, and while I respect this Algerian team deeply, my priority is to compete fiercely and secure qualification. I am not dwelling on revenge for 2019.”
The last AFCON meeting between the two sides came in the 2019 semi-finals at Cairo International Stadium, where Algeria emerged victorious thanks to a late free-kick goal by Riyad Mahrez.
On the other side, Vladimir Petković, the Bosnian-Swiss manager of the Fennecs, is confident his team can continue their winning record against Nigeria.
“The most important thing is the state of mind. It all starts from there, and from that point of view, we are irreproachable,” Petković said.
“Tomorrow, we need to be just as good defensively as offensively. All the details will matter against Nigeria. Nothing should be left to chance. We have the quality. We believe in ourselves and we just have to play a big game.”
Saturday’s match marks the 25th senior-level meeting between the two nations. Algeria has won 10 times, Nigeria nine, with five draws. One memorable clash came in the 1988 AFCON semi-finals, where Nigeria triumphed 9-8 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.
Historical encounters have included moments such as Samuel Okwaraji’s shot deflected into the net by Algeria’s Abderrazak Belgherbi, and Peter Rufai’s iconic save against Lakhdar Belloumi in the same 1988 semifinal.
With both teams boasting quality squads and strong mental focus, Saturday’s duel promises fireworks for fans in Morocco’s fourth-largest city.
