As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has highlighted the significant strides made in the country’s sports sector and expressed confidence in a brighter future driven by ongoing reforms.
In a goodwill message released by the SWAN National Secretariat on Wednesday, the Association’s President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, through Secretary-General Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, congratulated sportswriters, athletes, coaches, administrators, and other stakeholders for their role in Nigeria’s sporting journey.
Mr. Benjamin acknowledged that Nigeria’s sports landscape has faced numerous challenges over the years but noted that recent developments indicate a positive turnaround.
“The past decade and more in Nigeria’s sports ecosystem has been turbulent. However, I strongly believe in what the future holds. With the ongoing efforts under the present administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, there is renewed light for Nigerian sports to reclaim its lost glory,” he stated.
He described Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games as a potential turning point, saying it would not only restore international confidence but also boost economic opportunities and national pride. If successful, Nigeria would become the first African country to host the prestigious event.
“The last time Nigeria hosted a major international sporting event was in 2003. The absence of such opportunities has cost us immensely in revenue, foreign exchange, and global visibility. Hosting the Commonwealth Games will mark a new dawn for Nigerian sports,” he added.
The SWAN President also commended the ongoing elections into the National Sports Federations, describing the process as encouraging and transparent. He urged the leadership of the National Sports Commission to sustain the current pace of reform and accountability.
He called on all candidates to demonstrate maturity and sportsmanship during and after the elections and reaffirmed SWAN’s commitment to holding stakeholders accountable while supporting the growth of sports across the country.
