The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to resume enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing growing security concerns and the need to curb criminal activities linked to the misuse of tinted vehicle windows.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Force clarified that no court order had restrained it from enforcing existing laws regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. However, enforcement was earlier suspended to give motorists adequate time to regularise their documents and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.
According to the Police, recent security assessments indicate a rise in crimes committed using vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Criminal elements, including organised gangs, have reportedly exploited tinted windows to conceal their identities while carrying out offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The Force said the decision to resume enforcement was therefore necessary and urgent as a proactive measure to enhance public safety and protect communities across the country.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be carried out professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in strict compliance with extant laws. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to upholding the rule of law while working with stakeholders to ensure national security.
Motorists who require tinted glass permits were advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with legal requirements ahead of the enforcement date.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, dated December 15, 2025.
